Rebranded Blender 3D Modeling App Being Sold For $77

If you are into 3D modeling and animation either as a hobby or as part of your job, then you’ve heard of Blender. It’s an open source, free alternative to the heavyweight professional packages such as Maya and 3ds Max.

Blender is growing in popularity and features, and last year was used to create the stunning independent short film Sintel. The modeling and animation community are lucky to have such an advanced and feature-rich piece of software available.

Anyone can download and use Blender completely free, but the Blender Foundation has issued a press release detailing how two companies have rebranded the software and started selling it on their websites and eBay. The two companies in question are 3DMagix and IllusionMage.

Blender is distributed under the GNU GPL license which offers the freedom to modify the source and sell it. But these companies are removing all evidence that this is free software and available elsewhere while at the same time not adding anything new. It looks to be a scam aimed at making money off uninformed users.

The Blender Foundation has said that there is very little they can do about this as lawyers would be a waste of money. Instead they are trying to let as many people as possible know that these $77 packages are just Blender in false clothing. Avoid at all costs and let everyone else know about this scam.
